HBO has been in operation continuously since 1972, making it the longest running pay television service in the US. Providing service to over 32 million subscribers, they are the second largest premium channel in the United States. HBO stands for “Home Box Office”, which was originally to just be a working title while management came up with a different name. The first program and film ever broadcast on the channel was the 1971 film ‘Sometimes a Great Notion’ with Paul Newman and Henry Fonda. The first sports event they ever broadcasted followed immediately after the film, an NHL hockey game between the Vancouver Canucks and the New York Rangers. HBO’s subscriber base was initially quite small, only 8,000 subscribers, until they started broadcasting via sattelite in 1974. By April of 1975 the subscriber base had increased to approximately 100,000 and continued to grow from there.
