Macy’s History: A Brief Look at the Storied Department Store Franchise:The first successful Macy’s store was opened in 1858 on 6th Avenue in New York City. The location was a bit of a risk as it wasn’t anywhere near where the other dry goods stores were located, but they managed to pull in $11.08 in sales on their first day, which would translate to approximately $301.47 in today’s dollars. Macy’s business steadily grew to the point where they started taking over neighboring buildings. They added new departments, and began pioneering marketing techniques that department stores still use today: elaborate window displays and having a Santa Claus in-store at Christmas time. Macy’s has also been sponsoring the world-famousThanksgiving Day parade since 1924. They have also been sponsoring the Fourth of July Fireworks Display in 1976. Up until the 1950’s, only cash was accepted at Macy’s stores.
Eventually the original Macy’s department store grew so large that they had to move. The store moved to 18th street and Broadway where it stayed for almost forty years. Macy’s moved one more time: Herald Square at 34th street and Broadway. This location was so far from the other main dry goods stores that they offered a steam wagonette to shuttle customers to the new location. This is their main location to this day. The building was designed by the architects DeLomo and Cordes and built by the Fuller company. In 1978 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a historic landmark.
Today Macy’s sells clothing, footwear, bedding, beauty products, housewares, furniture, accessories, and jewelry. There are 793 stores in the United States and it is currently the largest American department store by retail sales. The company logo has always featured a star: after a tattoo that Macy’s founder Rowland Hussey Macy got while working aboard a whaling ship as a teenager.
